One of the ways that energy is wasted when trying to heat a building has to do with inefficiency inherent in the system. Part of this is leaks in the insulation that keeps heat from a furnace inside, and part of it is in the operation of the furnace itself. Here are some eco-friendly ways to prevent and repair inefficient areas of your heating system that might be causing you to waste energy.
Repair Furnace Insulation Leaks
No matter how efficient your furnace is, if the heat that it puts out just escapes through leaks in your building, that energy is entirely wasted. According to some statistics, this leak accounts for as much as 30 percent of the energy used to maintain a building's temperature. Fortunately, there are some new technologies out there these days that can help repair these leaks in buildings.
Some versions of this new technology use compressed nitrogen to force sealant into a heating system. Once the nitrogen particles are in the system, they will tend to move towards wherever there might be leaks in the insulation.
Once the mist of nitrogen hits the leaking area, this mist will stick to the area around the leak and automatically seal it off. Scientists are hopeful that systems like this one could push the percent of leaking heat down towards zero through continuing developments in the future.
Prevent Inefficiency in Your Furnace
Another important way to keep your furnace heating system efficient is to constantly check your furnace in order to prevent extensive repairs and cut back on inefficiency. For example, if you have a fiberglass filter for your furnace, then it's important to check it at least once per month. This is especially important if the filter is on the low end of the quality scale.
It can help to upgrade to a pleated filter, since these can last as long as three months. If you have permanent filters, it's essential to rinse and wash them once a month. If you're using an electronic air-cleaner for the furnace, then you'll need to clean it about every other month or so.
Additionally, it's important to be safe when cleaning filters, so make sure you turn everything off while you're doing it. But, if you don't clean these filters enough, their efficiency can go down by as much as 15 percent or more. Eventually the furnace will need major repairs in order to function properly.
